Top Tips for Improving Attendance, Punctuality and Progress

  • Take pride in helping your daughter establish good habits and routines
  • Let your daughter know that you think attendance and good time keeping are important and it is not right to miss school
  • Get involved with school by attending events such as Parent’s Evening
  • Ask your daughter if she is happy at school. Is she bored? Is she struggling to make friends? Contact us if this is a concern
  • Take an interest in your daughter’s work – ask about her day and praise her for things she has done well
  • Make sure your daughter arrives on time – late arrival is disruptive to all and will put her behind on her work from the start of the day
  • Check homework is done and get bags, PE kit and uniform ready the night before
  • Stick to a strict regular bedtime – 9 hours’ sleep is recommended
  • Give your daughter fruit and vegetables every day and encourage her to exercise
  • If your daughter says she is poorly, ask yourself if a day off is really needed – challenge minor ailments which may soon pass
  • Arrange medical appointments in school holidays or for after school. If this is not possible aim for the start/end of the day and make sure your daughter is in school for as much time as possible
  • Stay in touch with us during periods of absence and be willing to show evidence of reasons for time off such as prescriptions and doctor’s notes
  • Do not book family holidays in term time, not even if they overlap just a day or two – your daughter’s education is more important
  • Engage positively with school staff if you are contacted and when concerns are raised
  • Encourage reading at home; have newspapers, magazines or books available or consider joining a library
  • Consider a self-referral for Early Help support from the Council or contact school to arrange this for you

If you are having difficulties getting your daughter to attend regularly or on time then talk to a member of staff (0161 860 2999) and ask for help.
