Attendance Top Tips
Top tips to help your child improve their attendance, punctuality and progress.
Our Top Tips
- Take pride in helping your child establish good habits and routines
- Let your child know that you think attendance and good time keeping are important and it is not right to miss school
- Get involved with school by attending events such as Parent’s Evening
- Ask your child if they are happy at school. Are they bored? Are they struggling to make friends? Contact us if this is a concern
- Take an interest in your child’s work – ask about their day and praise them for things they have done well
- Make sure your child arrives on time – late arrival is disruptive to all and will put them behind on their work from the start of the day
- Check homework is done and get bags, PE kit and uniform ready the night before
- Stick to a strict regular bedtime – 9 hours’ sleep is recommended
- Give your child fruit and vegetables every day and encourage them to exercise
- If your child says they are poorly, ask yourself if a day off is really needed – challenge minor ailments which may soon pass
- Arrange medical appointments in school holidays or for after school. If this is not possible aim for the start/end of the day and make sure your child is in school for as much time as possible
- Stay in touch with us during periods of absence and be willing to show evidence of reasons for time off such as prescriptions and doctor’s notes
- Do not book family holidays in term time, not even if they overlap just a day or two – your child’s education is more important
- Engage positively with school staff if you are contacted and when concerns are raised
- Encourage reading at home; have newspapers, magazines or books available or consider joining a library
- Consider a self-referral for Early Help support from the Council or contact school to arrange this for you
