What is the Intent of our Curriculum?

Our intention is to provide our students with the knowledge, understanding and emotional resilience to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s modern Britain. We want our students to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible if they put their minds to it.

Our Personal Development curriculum will help enable them to successfully access the wider curriculum and to prepare them to be global citizens now and in their future roles in a diverse and ever-changing society. It promotes respect and tolerance for those who choose to live their lives differently to others. Having the ability to stay safe and healthy is a high priority and will allow our students to make informed decisions.

How is the Personal Development Curriculum Implemented?

• All pupils have two weekly PSHRE lessons during their form time
• Medium Term planning is given to all staff which has been developed by the school’s Personal Development lead
• Our Personal Development curriculum is bespoke and developed to meet the needs of our students
• The curriculum is linked to the British Values and the school’s Cooperative Values
• Assemblies are planned to cover additional content and help to supplement the Personal Development curriculum
• All year groups access Deep Learning Days throughout the year
• In addition to Relationships Education, the curriculum also teaches aspects of Sex Education – including the following topics:
  • Different kinds of relationships
  • Same sex relationships
  • Gender identity
  • Sexual harassment
• Students are aware of how to report any concerns and worries including bullying, peer on peer abuse and safeguarding concerns
• Visitors from external agencies (including virtual visitors) complement our Personal Development curriculum to offer additional learning
• Have opportunities to become student leaders within school
• Opportunities to explore a range of careers, further education and work experience

What will the Impact be on our Students?

Our Personal Development Curriculum is a five-year journey and we believe that when our students leave our school they will:

• Have the knowledge and skills to approach a range of real-life situations and to be able to make informed decisions
• Appreciate differences and diversity in society
• Recognise and apply the British Values
• Be better prepared to look after their physical health, mental health and wellbeing
• Develop positive and healthy relationships both now and in the future
• Have respect for themselves and others
• Learn how to be more emotionally resilient
• Be informed regarding potential career paths and gained vital employability skills
