Inclusion and SEN (Special Educational Needs)

The Inclusion Faculty is a multi-faceted support network within the school that provides support for students and their families.

SEN (Special Educational Needs)

The SENCO at Whalley Range 11-18 High School is Mrs S Zarar.

The SEN Team is highly experienced and seeks to support and advance all children who need additional support. We are committed to helping students in Years 7 to 13 overcome barriers to learning and progress onto successful pathways post 16. We offer:

  • In class support for Statemented students and targeted SEN students
  • Specialist assessment and one:one sessions from our SPLD teacher
  • Extra-curricular activities to improve students social development
  • Specialist support from our Senior Teaching SEN Teaching Assistant for transition in Year 6 for SEN students and transition into Post 16 education
  • Teaching Assistants with specialist knowledge of Speech, Language and Communication needs and Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD), Severe and Complex needs
  • Additional Reading and Numeracy Intervention
  • Additional Intervention from the school’s Educational Psychologist
  • Links with our specialist Outreach Schools
  • We hold an SEN Parents Forum every term where parents are given the opportunity to share experiences and contribute to improving our practice

Please find our SEN Policy on our policies page.

EAL (English as an Additional Language)

Our Specialist Team of EAL teachers and Teaching Assistants provide support for students who are new to English.

We offer an extensive Induction Programme for International New Arrivals with EAL. This includes 10 hours of English a week as well as in-class support. This is reinforced by sessions at lunchtime and after school to support with homework and preparation for exams.

Our popular EAL Parent Forum, which is held every term, allows you to discuss issues and share your experiences to help your daughter make progress.

One of our most experienced EAL teachers runs ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes for parents twice a week.

Should you require a translator for a parental meeting, we can offer this in Arabic and Urdu. Please contact Sofia Zarar for more details.

Improving Literacy and Numeracy Skills

All students with a reading age of between 7 and 9 attend booster classes through a Breakfast Club and during registration, provided by the Faculty. A team of Teaching Assistants, Teachers, Sixth Form mentors and External mentors provide excellent tuition. As a result the students make rapid progress.

Students who enter the school with a Level 3 or 4 in Maths will have the opportunity to attend the Maths Challenge to improve their skills.

Students make excellent progress and are rewarded by a certificate afternoon and trip at the end of the year.

Please contact Mrs Bajwa for further details.

SEN Information Report

Our SEND Report provides information for parents/carers of children who have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, and all those who support children with additional needs.

Please follow the link to view our SEND Report.

We are more than happy to discuss your daughter’s needs. Please contact Mrs S Zarar (Assistant Headteacher and SENCO) via the school for further information.
