GCSE Results
Congratulations to the class of 2020 on your wonderful results. We are very proud of what you have achieved and all your successes in your time at the school. You have worked extremely hard and have been a great pleasure to work with.
This would not have been possible without the commitment of your teachers and I would like to thank them for their hard work and the support they have given to you. Also, I would like to thank the families and the community who have also been a tremendous support to the students and helped them to achieve their best.
It has been a very difficult year and you have shown great resilience and integrity throughout and you have shown great maturity in working at home and preparing yourselves for the next stage in your education.
We wish you all the very best for the future as you continue to Aspire, Believe and Achieve.

A Message of Thanks to Mrs E. Hole, Academy Headteacher (Sep 2013 – Aug 2020)
Many of you will already be aware that Mrs Hole is retiring this year and that 2020 is her final set of GCSE and Advanced Level results.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank her for her incredible contribution to our school over the last 42 years. It is hard to capture the career of an outstanding individual in a short paragraph, but I wanted to take this opportunity to celebrate her career as she prepares to leave.
Mrs Hole embodies the school motto ‘Aspire, Believe, Achieve’. Much of the firmly established and highly successful practice recognised in our school has been inspired, shaped, supported and encouraged by Mrs Hole. She aspires for the best for our staff and students. From ‘Outstanding’ grades for Leadership and Management in Ofsted inspections (2017), to being awarded the Basic Skills Mark (since July 2014), Leadership Academy Status (Sept 2015), the Inspiring CEIAG award (July 2016), the International Values-based Education Trust quality mark (Sept 2015), the MEN Well-Being award (July 2017), SSAT ‘Transforming’ Exceptional Education Awards (July 2018) and SSAT Educational Outcomes Awards for the last four years for being in the top 10% or 20% for progress. All these awards evidence her commitment to raising standards, her inspirational leadership and her relentless belief in her staff and students. Her contribution has helped to take the Trust to new levels (ranked 5th in DfE 2019 tables), her work with the Governing body has shaped the curriculum and outcomes for our students and she is a core supporter of the Manchester Collaborative and countless other organisations across the city.
Those who have been fortunate enough to work with her or attend our school value her fairness and respect her judgement. Her achievements are numerous, and her legacy will be felt for years to come in the communities our students belong to, in the places led by leaders moulded by her guidance and in the school she has nurtured. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Mrs Hole has improved the life chances for thousands of children in Manchester. A simple sentence that both defines and conceals the work of over forty years in a Manchester secondary school.
We will miss her leadership, her support and her guidance and I am sure that you will join with me in wishing her a long and happy retirement.

Sixth Form Results
We would like to congratulate our Sixth Form students on their results and thank all of the staff for their hard work in supporting our students’ achievement. Congratulations and well done to the class of 2020.
The students in Class of 2020 experienced unique circumstances and dealt with it in a very mature manner. We are very proud of their outcomes and the majority have been able to progress onto their chosen courses at university or alternative pathways.
A big thank you to all the staff as none of this would have been possible without their excellent teaching and the support they have provided students throughout their time in the Sixth Form. We wish students all the very best for the future on their chosen pathways.

Many of you will already be aware that Mrs Lomax is retiring this year and that 2020 is her final set of 6th form results.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank her for her incredible contribution to our school and to the sixth form in particular. Mrs Lomax has always embodied the aspirations for our students and has supported thousands of students in their next step on their educational journey. As a Science teacher and as Head of Sixth Form I know that many, many students have valued her teaching and her guidance and have gone on to achieve amazing results at college and university. Her work with the teaching staff, local Post-16 working groups, Deloittes and many other organisations across Manchester has enabled our students to take up opportunities across the city, and she has been recognised for her contribution to Post-16 education across the city.
We will miss her wisdom, her kindness and her attention to detail, I am sure that you will join with me in wishing her a long and happy retirement.

Questions about your Results
We hope that you are happy with your grades and they allow you to move on to the next step in your education. You may have some questions about your results so please see below.
How were my Grades Decided?
School submitted centre assessed grades that were what your teacher thought you would have achieved had you sat the exam. They also submitted a rank order for you for each subject. Teachers used information such as coursework, PPEs, assessments, general records and performance throughout the course to decide upon your grade and rank.
Exam boards then checked the grades for consistency using statistical models. They worked to make sure grades were awarded fairly looking at multiple data sources.
Can I Appeal my Grade(s)?
A student can ask their centre to appeal to an awarding body if there is evidence that leads a candidate to believe:
- The centre made a clerical error when submitting their data
- The awarding body made an error calculating/assigning or communicating their grade
- There has been lots of coverage about using mock results if students are not happy with their GCSE results, but the detail of this has not yet been released by the exam boards
A student cannot:
- Appeal against their centre assessed grade or rank
- Appeal against the school’s process in calculating their grade/rank
- Appeal directly to any awarding body
If you wish to appeal please email GCSEresults@wrhs1118.co.uk for an appointment in the week beginning 24th August with a member of the Senior Leadership Team. It will be important to be specific about the subject you want to appeal, the reason why the grade should be appealed and the evidence that you have
If you are concerned about bias, discrimination or any other factor that suggests the centre did not behave with care or integrity when determining your centre assessed grade/rank order please raise these concerns with school.
Can I Take my Exams Another Time?
All GCSE exams (not BTEC) are being offered in a one off ‘Autumn Series’ in Nov 2020 for GCSE.
If you wish to enter yourself for any Autumn exams you must email Mrs Bain at cbain@wrhs1118.co.uk confirming your name, your exam candidate number and the subject(s) you want to sit. These must be subjects you would have sat in Summer 2020.
- Autumn Entry Deadline GCSE (excluding English Lang and Maths) – 17th Sept 1pm
- Autumn Entry Deadline GCSE English Language and Maths – 1st Oct 1pm
