The Sports Leaders Qualification is a nationally recognised qualification, which develops leaders and leadership skills in planning and evaluating sports activities.

Whalley Range 11-18 High School received Sports Leaders Academy status last year and are only the 5th school in the Northwest to receive the accolade, putting Whalley Range at the forefront of sports leadership across the country. With a committed team of sports leaders from all year groups work, working collaboratively together to develop their own individual leadership skills and ensuring PE and physical activity remains at the heart of Manchester.

Our leaders are provided with a variety of opportunities within the sports leadership programme giving students opportunity to be involved in primary and secondary schools competitions, such as primary Netball, Football and Basketball to name a few, secondary opportunities allows students to be involved in intra and inter-school competitions. Through these opportunity, leaders are provided with a variety roles they can do, such as officiating, leading, scoring to name a few.

Leaders are used within lessons to support in leading activities and their peers, students will have opportunity to lead at extra curricular clubs.

Through partnership with the Manchester PE Association, leaders have the opportunity to be rewarded for the hours the contribute voluntarily through working towards Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum awards. Each award represents a specific number of hours that leaders have contributed to through their leadership whether this be in inter school competitions or leading at extra curricular clubs. Since the start of the programme, Whalley Range 11-18 High School leader has invested in over 3000 hours of leadership for the school community, this is a fantastic achievement.

Our Sports Leaders have been involved with Sky Sports for the past few years, in which they are able to work with athlete mentors developing leadership skills and organising and leading on specific projects, some of these include Year 5/6 day, and inter-hour tournaments. Athlete Mentors have include Courtney Fry and Rik Waddon to name a few.
