What Will I Study?
You will study four units over the two years, and they are:
Unit 1 Human Lifespan Development
Students examine physical, intellectual, emotional and social development across the human lifespan, the interaction between biological and social factors in health and wellbeing and how health care professionals provide effective care.
Unit 2 Human Biology and Health
Students study how the body is organised and functions, how body systems maintain health, and how common disorders affect normal processes such as respiration, energy use and homeostasis.
Unit 3 Principles of Health and Social Care Practice
Students learn the core values and professional standards that guide NHS and social care practice, applying these to meet individuals’ care and support needs in real-life settings.
Unit 6 Safe Environments in Health and Social Care
Students examine how to maintain safe, high-quality care through effective working practices, professional responsibilities and record keeping, while exploring local health and social care services.
How Will I Be Assessed?
Students are assessed using a combination of internal assessments, which are marked by teachers, and external assessments which are set and marked by Pearson:
- Mandatory units have a combination of internal and external assessments
- All optional units are internally assessed
What Could I Do Next?
The AAQ (new BTEC) Health and Social Care course, when combined with A levels, offers an excellent route to university for a variety of degrees. Students have progressed to higher education or employment within nursing, midwifery, primary education, social work as well as many other areas where interaction with the public is a large part of the job.
This pathway is more suited for students who wish to pursue a career in the health and social care industry, with the exception of medicine and dentistry.
