Students Design a Community Tower Block ( Published: 18/11/2019)
On arrival, students put their essential skills straight into action:
- Firstly, they began to gather information about their hosts and the volunteers who were joining them for the day
- Then, via a guided tour, they further explored the workplace of Lovell in Manchester
- Lastly, in teams, students were set a problem solving challenge: to design a new tower that the local community would be proud of
The students set about designing a tower with apartments and extra special features to improve the lives of the residents. Their designs were inspired by different shapes and they built a scale model of their proposed idea.
The day ended with a chance to share their achievements with a panel of volunteers. They reflected on how they had applied problem solving skills throughout the challenge and looked ahead to how they could apply this skill again in the future.
Many thanks to the event organisers, Enabling Enterprise, and to the hosts, Lovell. Our students really enjoyed the experience:
I didn’t realise how much more there is to the construction industry than just the building site. It’s really interesting to learn about sustainability and sourcing the right materials.
