AAQ Applied Science Level 3 (Single)

With this qualification, students will be able to progress onto a career as a biomedical scientist, forensic scientist, microbiologist, nurse, teacher, physiotherapist, radiographer and more.

What Will I Study?

  • Unit 1 Principles and Application of Biology – Structure and function of cells and tissues, biological molecules, enzymes and their role in organisms
  • Unit 2 Principles and Applications of Chemistry – Structure of the Periodic Table and its implications on physical and chemical properties of substances, through analysis of different bonding methods
  • Unit 3 Principles and Applications of Physics – Waves and their applications; force principles and their application in transportation and construction of electrical circuits
  • Unit 4 Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques – Practical applications across the sciences, including chromatography, colorimetry and electrical circuits
  • Unit 5 Science Investigation Skills – Investigative research, including planning, data collection, analysis and evaluation

How Will I Be Assessed?

Students are assessed using a combination of internal assessments (coursework), which are marked by teachers, and external assessments (exams) which are set and marked by Pearson:

  • Mandatory units have a combination of internal and external assessments
  • All optional units are internally assessed
  • Exams are in January or June
  • Students have the ability to re-sit exams in AAQs if required

What Could I Do Next?

This qualification can lead to progression to the following degrees:

  • BSc (Hons) Applied Sport and Exercise Sciences
  • BSc (Hons) Nursing
  • BSc (Hons) Secondary Science Education

Alternatively, you could pursue a career in laboratories, research institutions or clinical healthcare settings. Many students also progress into science-related apprenticeships or technical roles

You can successfully pursue a degree, apprenticeship or employment after this course.

Please note it is not possible to apply for medicine or dentistry with this qualification.

Subject Specific Entry Requirements

  • Grade 5-4 in Combined science or a grade 5 in one of the science GCSEs
  • Grade 4 in English
