Students Visit the Insolvency Service in Manchester ( Published: 08/07/2019)

In collaboration with Enabling Enterprise, students have been taking part in a series of Challenge Days; a range of employer visits supported by use of the Skills Builder Framework. They’re most recent visit was to the Insolvency Service in Manchester.

What a great way for these girls to hear more about the Civil Service, Insolvency Service and HMRC – they have asked some great questions and clearly approached the day with professional maturity.
Civil Service Volunteer

The Insolvency Service is a Government agency that helps to deliver economic confidence by supporting those in financial distress, tackling financial wrongdoing and maximising returns to creditors. The Insolvency Service is an executive agency of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy with headquarters in London. It has around 1,700 staff operating from 22 locations across Great Britain, including Manchester.

The day started off with students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the essential skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed them to to see the great variety of jobs available in the Civil Service.

As part of a challenge, students grouped up and took on the roles of technology companies. These companies were challenged to apply their problem solving skills to design a new app that employees could use to improve their communication. Alongside choosing a catchy name for their new app, teams thought about the different functions it could have and how each of these might help solve a work-related problem. Teams worked efficiently and were able to make key design decisions including the app’s icon and how it would appear in the app store. The day culminated with the technology companies presenting their app, while judges assessed their problem solving skills.
