Bursary Fund

The 16-19 Bursary Fund is provided by the Government to support students who may encounter financial barriers to their education.

Whalley Range Sixth Form College is part of the Greater Manchester Education Trust, for full details please refer to the trust bursary policy.

The criteria to apply for the Whalley Range Sixth Form bursary is broken down in to 2 elements:

Element 1

Young People who meet any of the criteria below will be eligible to receive an annual bursary of £1,200:

  • LAC (this includes those classed as an unaccompanied asylum-seeking child)
  • Previously LAC (PLAC)
  • Receiving Income Support or Universal Credit because they are financially supporting themselves and/or someone who is dependent on them and living with them, such as a child or a partner
  • Receiving Disability Living Allowance or Personal Independence Payments in their own right, as well as Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) or Universal Credit in their own right

Element 2

Young people who live in a household with a combined income of below £28,000 per annum, including any benefits received will be able to apply for a bursary. This is subject to them maintaining excellent attendance, good behaviour and making good academic progress. These students will still be entitled to receive Free School Meals whilst attending the Sixth Form.


How to Apply for the Bursary

To apply for the bursary, you must complete the application form via the Bursary 16+ module:

If your circumstances change during the course of the year, you can still apply for the bursary. Please speak to the Head of Sixth Form, Mr Mycock, about this.

Students’ bursary can only be used to directly support resources identified as necessary to help them access education. Students in receipt of the bursary will be provided with further guidance of what they are able to claim for:

Our Pass

This year students can apply for Our Pass, which is a bus pass that offers free bus travel for 16-18 year olds across Greater Manchester. Please visit the website ourpass.co.uk to find out more details about how to apply for it. The school will reimburse students with £10 for the initial one-off payment for the card, once the Sixth Form Administrator has taken a copy of their Our Pass card.

Students aged 19 will be unable to apply for Our Pass. These students where eligible for the bursary are able to claim back college related bus travel. Receipts must be kept and submitted to the sixth form through the bursary system.
