Students Design a Community Tower Block ( Published: 18/11/2019)

In collaboration with Enabling Enterprise, students have been taking part in a series of Challenge Days; a range of employer visits supported by use of the Skills Builder Framework. They’re most recent visit was to Lovell in Manchester, a leading construction company who build affordable homes in the UK.

Students design a tower block as part of a challenge day at Lovell in Manchester in 2019

On arrival, students put their essential skills straight into action:

  1. Firstly, they began to gather information about their hosts and the volunteers who were joining them for the day
  2. Then, via a guided tour, they further explored the workplace of Lovell in Manchester
  3. Lastly, in teams, students were set a problem solving challenge: to design a new tower that the local community would be proud of

The students set about designing a tower with apartments and extra special features to improve the lives of the residents. Their designs were inspired by different shapes and they built a scale model of their proposed idea.

The day ended with a chance to share their achievements with a panel of volunteers. They reflected on how they had applied problem solving skills throughout the challenge and looked ahead to how they could apply this skill again in the future.

Many thanks to the event organisers, Enabling Enterprise, and to the hosts, Lovell. Our students really enjoyed the experience:

I didn’t realise how much more there is to the construction industry than just the building site. It’s really interesting to learn about sustainability and sourcing the right materials.
